In-Home Family Photography
Your Complete Guide
There’s something about photographing a family in their own home that just can’t be replicated anywhere else. The way your toddler has a favorite corner of the couch. The morning light that pours into your kitchen. The chaos of breakfast, the pile of shoes by the door, the dog who refuses to stay out of the frame. That’s real life — and that’s exactly what makes in-home family sessions so special.
If you’ve been searching for Bay Area family photography, San Francisco family photographer, or in-home family sessions near me, you’ve landed in the right place. This guide walks you through everything you need to know about booking an in-home session, what to expect, and how to make the most of it.
Why In-Home Family Sessions Are Different (in the Best Way)
Most families I meet tell me the same thing: “Our house isn’t photo-ready.” And every single time, I want to hug them — because that’s exactly the point.
In-home sessions aren’t about having a perfectly styled interior or spotless countertops. They’re about capturing your family as you actually are, in the place where your real life happens. The worn-in couch where you all pile up for movie night. The kitchen where your kids “help” you make pancakes. The backyard where little ones run barefoot in the grass.

The Benefits of an In-Home Session:
Great for all ages — Especially wonderful for newborns, babies, and toddlers who thrive in familiar environments
Comfort and ease — Kids (and parents!) are naturally more relaxed at home, which means more genuine smiles and way fewer meltdowns
No travel stress — No packing everyone up, no parking woes in San Francisco, no schedules to work around
Your story, your space — The photos will actually look like your life, not a stock image
Flexible timing — We can shoot at the golden hour light that hits your living room just right, or during your family’s natural morning routine

What an In-Home Session Looks Like
What an In-Home Session Looks Like with Becca Henry Photography
I photograph families across the entire Bay Area — from San Francisco and Marin to the East Bay, Peninsula, and South Bay. Every home is different, and I love that. Here’s what you can expect when you book with me:
Before the Session
Once you book, I’ll send you a short questionnaire to learn about your family ~ your kids’ personalities, your favorite spots in the house, what a typical morning or afternoon looks like for you. This helps me come in ready to capture your family, not a generic version of one.
We’ll also talk through timing. The best light in your home matters a lot, so I’ll ask which direction your windows face and what time of day tends to be brightest and most magical.
The Day Of
I show up with my camera and a whole lot of calm energy. No big lighting setups. No formal posing prompts. My job is to blend into your space and let the real moments unfold.
Here’s what a typical session might look like:
- Kids playing in their room while I document the mess and the magic
- A snuggle pile on the bed with everyone in their pajamas
- Making breakfast or baking together in the kitchen
- Reading books, building LEGO, chasing the dog around the backyard
- Quiet moments ~ a baby nursing, a parent sneaking a kiss, a toddler totally absorbed in something tiny and fascinating
Sessions typically run 60–90 minutes and I usually capture more than enough in that time. Kids do better with shorter, focused sessions anyway ~ there’s less chance of a meltdown, and more chance of genuine joy.
After the Session
Within a few weeks, you’ll receive a beautifully edited gallery of high-resolution images delivered digitally. Print rights included ~ because these photos deserve to be on your walls, not just on your phone.

How to Prep Your Home (Without Stressing Out)
Here’s your permission slip: you do not need to deep clean your entire house.
That said, a little light tidying goes a long way. Here are my practical tips:
Do:
- Clear countertops in the kitchen and bathroom of products and clutter
- Make the beds (or at least the main one you’ll be photographed on)
- Put away anything that feels visually distracting ~ piles of mail, random laundry, too many toys scattered everywhere
- Open blinds and curtains to let in as much natural light as possible
- Have your kids wear comfortable, coordinating outfits (not necessarily matching — just in a similar color palette)
Don’t:
- Panic about small imperfections ~ they won’t show up the way you think they will
- Over-style your space so it doesn’t look like your space
- Stress the kids out ~ a tense morning before the session will show in the photos
What to wear: Complimentary colors work well. Let your personalities shine through. Avoid loud logos and super bright colors that clash. Comfortable is key. Pajamas or casual weekend clothes often make for the coziest, most timeless images. You can text me outfit ideas as well.

Frequently Asked Questions
How far in advance should I book? I recommend booking 4–8 weeks out, especially during busy seasons (fall, holiday time, and spring). Newborn sessions can be booked in advance with a flexible due date window.
What if my kids won’t cooperate? This is the #1 worry I hear — and it almost never becomes a real problem. Kids do best in their own space, and I’m experienced at working with wiggly toddlers, shy kids, and everything in between. The “uncooperative” moments often make for the best photos anyway.
What if my home doesn’t have great light? Most homes have at least one or two rooms with good natural light. We’ll talk through this before your session and choose the best spots. I do not use flash for lifestyle sessions — natural light only.
Do you travel for sessions outside the Bay Area? Yes! I’m available for travel sessions. Reach out and let’s chat about your location.
Can we do part of the session outside? Absolutely. If you have a backyard, a front stoop, or a neighborhood spot you love, we can incorporate it into the session.
