Maternity Photography in the Bay Area
Your Complete Guide
Pregnancy is fleeting — just a handful of months out of an entire lifetime — and it’s a season worth documenting. Whatever you’re picturing for your maternity session, whether that’s soft golden hour light on a hillside, your favorite cozy corner at home, or a beautiful San Francisco backdrop, this guide walks you through everything you need to know.
If you’ve been searching for Bay Area maternity photographer, San Francisco maternity photos, or maternity session near me, you’re in the right place.
Why a Maternity Session Is Worth It
So many parents tell me the same thing after their session: “I almost skipped this.” And every time, they’re so glad they didn’t.
Pregnancy is a season of huge change — physically, emotionally, in your relationships, in your sense of self. A maternity session isn’t just a pretty photo of a belly. It’s a record of who you were right before everything changed again. It’s a way to honor your body, your partnership, your growing family, and the anticipation of someone who doesn’t exist yet but is already so loved.

The Benefits of a Maternity Session:
- A record of this exact season — Pregnancy lasts months, but it feels like it disappears the moment your baby arrives
- Celebrating your body — A chance to feel beautiful and seen during a time when it’s easy to feel anything but
- Documenting your partnership — The quiet, tender in-between moments before you become a family of three (or four, or more)
- Including siblings — A sweet way to capture older kids anticipating their new role
- Flexibility of setting — Whether you want the comfort of home or the beauty of an outdoor Bay Area backdrop, maternity sessions adapt easily to your style
In-Home Maternity Sessions
Soft, intimate, and unhurried. We’ll use your home’s natural light, your favorite cozy spots, maybe the nursery you’re setting up. These sessions feel quiet and tender — think soft robes, oversized sweaters, bare feet on hardwood floors, a partner’s hand resting on a belly. If you want something dreamy and editorial without leaving your living room, this is it.

On-Location Maternity Sessions
Golden hour on a hillside. Wind moving through a flowy dress on the coast. Soft light filtering through a eucalyptus grove. On-location sessions bring a more sweeping, romantic feel, and the Bay Area offers no shortage of stunning backdrops within a short drive of almost anywhere.
Not sure which fits you best? I’ll help you decide based on your style, your due date, and what’s logistically easiest in your third trimester (because let’s be honest — comfort matters a lot right now). What a Maternity Session Looks Like with Becca Henry Photography
Before the Session
After booking, I’ll check in on your due date to help find the sweet spot for timing (more on that below), send you style and outfit guidance, and talk through location — whether that’s your home, a favorite outdoor spot, or somewhere I recommend.
The Day Of
I keep maternity sessions relaxed and unrushed. We’ll move through a mix of:
- Portraits of you alone, honoring this season of your body and your strength
- Photos with you partner if that applies ~ embraces, quiet conversations, hands resting together on the belly
- Sibling moments, if you have older kids joining
- Candid movement ~ walking, swaying, laughing together
- Quiet, still moments that capture the anticipation of what’s coming
Sessions anywhere from run 60 minutes to 2 hours depending on the collection you’d like
After the Session
You’ll receive a beautifully edited, high-resolution digital gallery within a few weeks, with print rights included.

When Should You Schedule Your Maternity Session?
The sweet spot for most maternity sessions is between 28 and 34 weeks. At this point, your belly is beautifully round and visible, but you’re (usually) still comfortable enough to move, pose, and enjoy the experience without too much physical strain.
A few things to keep in mind:
- Before 28 weeks, the belly may not have that classic rounded shape yet
- After 36 weeks, things can get a little less predictable ~ swelling, fatigue, and the small chance baby arrives early
- Multiples (twins, etc.) often benefit from scheduling slightly earlier, since babies tend to arrive sooner
- Book with some flexibility ~ pregnancy doesn’t always follow a calendar, so I always recommend booking your session a few weeks before your ideal window so we have room to adjust
How to Prepare for Your Session:
What to Wear
This is the question I get asked most, so here’s my honest guidance:
- Flowy dresses are a maternity session favorite for a reason ~ they move beautifully in outdoor light and skim the body in a flattering way
- Fitted dresses or bodysuits are great if you want to show off your belly more directly, especially for in-home sessions
- Soft, neutral tones ~creams, blush, sage, ~ photograph beautifully and won’t compete with your skin tone or the background
- Layer textures ~ a cardigan, a robe, a chunky knit ~ these add dimension, especially for cozy in-home sessions
- Coordinate, don’t match ~ if your partner or kids are joining, aim for a complementary palette rather than identical outfits
- Comfortable shoes (or bare feet!) ~ especially if we’re walking on grass, sand, or uneven ground
I’m always happy to send a more detailed style guide once you book, including specific brand and rental recommendations.

A Few Practical Tips:
- Stay hydrated and bring snacks
- Plan for bathroom breaks
- Don’t worry about “perfect” hair and makeup
- Bring your partner and any older kids if you want them included

Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the best week to schedule a maternity session? Most clients book between 28–34 weeks, when the belly is beautifully round but you’re still comfortable moving around. I’m happy to help you find the right timing for your specific pregnancy.
Can my partner and other kids be part of the session? Absolutely — many of my favorite maternity sessions include partners and older siblings. Just let me know when booking so we can plan accordingly.
What if I go into labor early or my due date changes? I build flexibility into my maternity bookings precisely because pregnancy doesn’t run on a strict schedule. If timing shifts, we’ll work together to adjust.
Should I get hair and makeup done? That’s entirely up to you. Some clients love a polished, professional look; others prefer soft and natural. Both photograph beautifully — I can also recommend Bay Area hair and makeup artists if you’d like that extra touch.
Do you offer newborn sessions too? Yes! Many clients book a maternity session and a newborn session together to capture both ends of this transformative chapter.
In-home or on-location — which should I choose? It really comes down to personal style and comfort. In-home sessions feel intimate and cozy; on-location sessions offer more sweeping, romantic backdrops. I’m happy to help you decide what fits your vision best.
