On-Location Family Photography
Your Complete Guide
There’s a reason on-location family sessions remain one of the most popular ways to document your family. Rolling hills, golden light at the coast, the energy of a favorite neighborhood park, the quiet beauty of a eucalyptus grove — the Bay Area is, frankly, one of the most photogenic regions in the country, and it makes the perfect backdrop for timeless family photos.
If you’ve been searching for Bay Area family photographer, San Francisco outdoor family photos, or on-location family session near me, this guide covers everything you need to know — from choosing a location to what to wear to how to prep your family for a stress-free, beautiful session.

Why On-Location Sessions Are a Bay Area Favorite
There’s something about getting outside as a family that just makes everyone looser, sillier, and more themselves. Kids run. Parents laugh. The scenery does half the work for you.
On-location sessions give you:
- Stunning, varied backdrops ~ From coastal bluffs to redwood groves to rolling golden hills, the Bay Area offers incredible diversity within a short drive
- Beautiful natural light ~ Open sky, golden hour glow, and dappled forest light all make for dynamic, dimensional images
- Room to move and play ~ Kids get to run, climb, explore ~ which almost always leads to the most genuine, joyful expressions
- A sense of place ~ These photos capture not just your family, but a specific Bay Area season and spot you love
- Great for larger groups ~ Extended family, multiple kids, or big group photos often work better with the space and flexibility of an outdoor location

What an On-Location Session Looks Like
I photograph families at parks, beaches, trails, and scenic spots all across the Bay Area ~ San Francisco, Marin, the East Bay, Peninsula, and South Bay. Here’s what to expect when you book with me.
Before the Session
After booking, I’ll send you a short questionnaire about your family and help you choose the right location based on your style preferences, your kids’ ages, and the time of year. I’ll also recommend the best time of day for light — usually early morning or that gorgeous golden hour before sunset.
If you already have a meaningful spot in mind ~ your favorite park, a beach you visit every summer, the trail near your house ~ I love incorporating that into the session too.
The Day Of
We’ll meet at your chosen location and spend the first few minutes just letting everyone settle in and get comfortable. I don’t do a lot of stiff, posed photography. Instead, I’ll guide you through simple movement and connection prompts ~ walking together, piggyback rides, tickle fights, a parent swinging a toddler in the air ~ and capture the real reactions as they happen.
A typical on-location session includes a mix of:
- Candid, in-motion shots ~ walking, running, twirling
- Posed family groupings for those classic, wall-worthy portraits
- One-on-one parent/child moments
- Sibling interactions (the giggly ones, the goofy ones, all of it)
- Quiet, connected moments ~ a hug, a hand-hold, a forehead kiss
Sessions typically run 45–60 minutes, which tends to be the sweet spot for keeping kids engaged without hitting meltdown territory.
After the Session
You’ll receive a beautifully edited, high-resolution digital gallery within a few weeks, with print rights included so these images can live on your walls, not just your camera roll.

How to Prepare for Your Session
Choosing a Location
Some of my favorite types of locations across the Bay Area include:
- Open meadows and golden hillsides ~ soft, dreamy backgrounds, especially in spring and early summer
- Beaches and coastal bluffs ~ moody, dramatic light, great for sunset sessions
- Neighborhood and regional parks ~ easy access, playgrounds for younger kids to burn energy beforehand
- Tree-lined trails and groves ~ dappled light and a more intimate, woodsy feel
- Urban backdrops ~ colorful murals, iconic streets, and city energy for families who love that aesthetic
Not sure which fits your family? I’ll help you decide based on your style, your kids’ ages, and what time of year we’re shooting.
What to Wear
Stick to a soft, cohesive color palette ~ think creams, dusty blues, sage, terracotta, and warm neutrals. Avoid large logos, neon colors, and busy patterns, which tend to pull focus from your faces. Layering textures (a chunky knit, a flowy dress, denim) adds visual interest without looking too matchy.
Comfortable shoes matter too ~ we may be walking on grass, sand, or uneven trails.

Tips for a Smooth Session
Trust the process ~ I’ll guide you through prompts and positioning so you don’t have to think about posing at all
Time it around naps and meals ~ A well-fed, well-rested kid is a cooperative kid
Build in buffer time ~ Traffic and parking can be unpredictable, especially in San Francisco and around popular parks
Bring snacks and water — Especially for longer sessions or hot days
Let go of “perfect” — The slightly messy hair, the mid-laugh blur, the toddler refusing to look at the camera — these are usually everyone’s favorite photos later

Frequently Asked Questions
How do we choose a location? I’ll help guide you based on your family’s style, your kids’ ages, the season, and how far you’re willing to travel. I’m happy to suggest a handful of options or work with a spot you already love.
What if it’s foggy or rainy on the day of our session? Bay Area weather can change fast, especially near the coast. I keep an eye on conditions and will work with you to reschedule or pivot to a backup location if needed.
What if my kids won’t cooperate outside? Honestly, most kids do even better outdoors than in a studio — there’s room to move and explore, which keeps them naturally engaged. I build in time for free play and rarely force stiff posing.
How far in advance should I book? I recommend booking 4–8 weeks out, especially for popular golden hour time slots in spring, summer, and fall.
Do you travel outside the Bay Area for sessions? Yes! I’m available for travel sessions — reach out and let’s talk about your location.
Can we combine an on-location and in-home session? Absolutely — some families love starting at home and heading to a nearby park or beach afterward for a mix of both settings.
