A Guide to Getting Married at The San Francisco University Club
If you’ve been dreaming of a San Francisco wedding that feels genuinely of this city ~ rooted in its history, steeped in its character, and wrapped in a view of its skyline ~ the University Club might be exactly what you’ve been looking for without knowing it had a name.
Nestled on Nob Hill at 800 Powell Street, the University Club of San Francisco is the kind of place that makes guests stop talking mid-sentence when they walk through the door. Dark wood. Stained glass. A library lined with rare books. And the San Francisco skyline glittering through floor-to-ceiling windows. It’s not trying to impress you. It just does.
Built in 1909 to designs by Walter Bliss and William Faville, the Club was
originally a gathering place for university alumni ~ and the building carries
that history in every surface. Walls hung salon-style with taxidermy and old
prints of San Francisco. Dark green stained glass windows representing
different universities. Leather armchairs that have been here longer than
you’ve been alive. Working fireplaces. A pool room where someone once
turned the billiard table into a dining table with a champagne tower
centerpiece, which is exactly the energy this place supports.
What makes the University Club special for weddings is not just the
aesthetics ~ it’s that the building has genuine soul. You’re not getting
married in a space that was decorated to look like a private club. You’re
getting married in one. That distinction is palpable from the moment you
arrive, and your guests will feel it too.

WHY COUPLES LOVE THIS VENUE
The University Club holds a particular kind of magic for couples who want their wedding to feel genuinely San Franciscan~not just located in the city, but of it. This is not a venue that could exist anywhere else. The building’s history, its materials, its specific combination of Gilded Age grandeur and intimate scale, its views of Nob Hill and the city below ~ all of it is irreducibly, essentially San Francisco
Especially popular with:

What couples rave about:
The food comes up in almost every review ~ unprompted, enthusiastically, often with the specific phrase “best meal I’ve ever had at a wedding.” The in-house catering at the University Club is genuinely outstanding, locally sourced and seasonally inspired, and guests notice. Multiple couples report friends and family still talking about it months later.
Yvonne, the in-house coordinator, is described across years of reviews as the kind of professional who makes couples feel like everything is handled ~ because it is. She has been praised for gently guiding couples through every detail.
Images of
the University Club of San Francisco
I truly feel like I work with the best folks.. like Jason and Connor. They’re super funny, good hearted, and the sweetness they share with one another and others is contagious .
Their big day started with getting ready at the Stanford Court. After so many years of shooting weddings I find documenting the couple before the ceremony to be so special…I feel ( and photograph) the build up, anticipation, and excitement or the tender moments like Jason wearing his dad’s watch so he had his dad with him on his wedding day. I also get to meet and spend some time with some important members of the wedding. ..framily… family or friends who’ve become family. ( On a side note I want to give a shout out to their sharp suits by SuitSupply. )
After getting the final touches ready we took to the streets of downtown San Francisco for some photos!Stanford Court was catty corner away from the venue it was easy breezy to get some great shots before the ceremony. We even got some family photos done beforehand which means even more cocktail hour play time!
For their venue they chose The University Club of San Francisco. It has windows that line the wall where you have the most perfect skyline view. The club is truly a gem rock smack dab in the middle of the city! A perfect setting for a ceremony.
After the ceremony we headed downstairs for cocktail hour. When dinner was ready, family and friends started the night off with heartfelt toasts. It was lovely.
What can I say..everybody looked dapper AF, DJ AirSun was on point, the dance floor was full, and party were popping! The last thing to note which I absolutely loved.. was Jason and Connor’s first dance was in front of the night skyline AND there was a building with rainbow lights shining bright!
Photo Opportunities at The San Francisco City Club

The Library
Floor-to-ceiling shelves of rare books, a wooden mantelpiece, warm amber light, and a color palette that makes photographers want to stay for the rest of the evening. The Library is on the fourth floor and is one of the most distinctive portrait locations at any SF venue. First looks here produce images that stop scrolling thumbs on social media. Schedule it early in your timeline — before the rooms fill with guests ~ and protect it from being cut when the day runs long.

The Fourth Floor Balcony ~ The City View
The only outdoor space on the property, and worth treating as a deliberate portrait moment rather than an afterthought. The
Nob Hill skyline view at cocktail hour, as the city begins to glow, is the defining San Francisco image at this venue. Brief and weather-dependent, but build it into your timeline and it will be among your most-used photos.

The Lounge Fireplace
First Looks and Family Formals :The fireplace in the main fourth-floor Lounge is a natural gathering point and a strong portrait anchor during the pre-ceremony window. The surrounding wood paneling and warm light give you a richly textured environment that works beautifully for family formals when guests are still arriving and you have a few unscheduled minutes to work with.

The Streets of Nob Hill ~ The City Chapter
Grace Cathedral is three blocks away, the cable car routes run past the building, and the streets of Nob Hill have a distinctive, irreplaceable San Francisco character that no interior can replicate. Build 30–45 minutes into your timeline for city portraits ~ pre-ceremony, during cocktail hour, or immediately after the first look. The spontaneous congratulations
from strangers as you move through the city produce some of the most genuinely joyful images of the entire day.
